New Year’s resolution: more sport! That way you stay tuned.
New Year – New Me! Where the corks pop on New Year’s Eve, the good intentions are not far behind. The frontrunner here is a classic: getting back to regular exercise in the new year. To help you stick to your fitness routine in 2025 in the long term, here are our 5 tips for sticking to it!
More sport in 2025! Getting started is quickly mastered with a good dose of New Year’s Eve motivation. But once the initial motivation has fizzled out, the visit to the gym slowly creeps out again. For long-term success, you need a solid routine. We help you to build these up:
1. Big goal – small steps
A typical beginner’s mistake: an unrealistic goal and no plan on how to achieve it. Too bad, because a good plan is half the battle.
For example, if you set yourself the goal in January of losing five kilos by the summer or running a marathon in the fall, this is a concrete plan. You can work towards it now with consistent small steps and thus avoid disappointment and frustration.
For example, a small goal could be to run one kilometer more each month or to lose 500 grams of weight per week. Then you can track your success precisely. Swica, for example, has a great solution with the Benevita app, where you can collect points as well as tracking. This will help you stay motivated and not lose sight of your goal.
2. Plan fixed training times – and stick to them
Old wisdom: routine beats motivation. So make sure you turn your training into a routine and don’t rely on your fickle motivation. Put your training session in your calendar and treat it like an important appointment. Sport will quickly become an integral part of your week.
Our tip: Choose a time slot that works well for you and clear any obstacles out of the way the day before. Lay out your sports clothes the evening before and take your sports bag to work with you if necessary. That way you won’t even be tempted to find an excuse. Use apps or your digital calendar to send you automatic reminders and remind you of your workouts. Consistency is key – the more often you follow your plan, the more likely it is to become a habit.
3. Search and find your sport
Not everyone wants to lift weights every day to stay fit. Fortunately, sports are a dime a dozen. So find out which activities you really enjoy. Whether it’s yoga, swimming, dancing or an intensive cardio workout at home – the most important thing is that you enjoy it and don’t torture yourself with the training. But keep actively searching and experiment with different courses or training methods until you find what really suits you.
Our tip: Ask your friends about their favorite sports. Many clubs and gyms often offer a free trial lesson. At ACTIV FITNESS, for example, we have over 30 different group fitness classes in our program – the perfect opportunity to try out something new in an uncomplicated way. If you prefer to be outdoors, integrate activities such as cycling or hiking into your program. The key is to create regular variety so that boredom doesn’t set in.
4. Find a training partner
It’s easier to train together! A gym buddy not only motivates you, it also makes it more difficult to skip the planned sports session. The prospect of meeting up with your buddy gives your training an additional positive boost. Not only are successes shared in pairs – boundaries are also broken and people push each other to achieve their best performances.
Our tip: Talk to friends or family members who have also made the resolution to become more sporty. Arrange fixed training times and don’t let each other down. Work colleagues are also great for fitness challenges. Alternatively, you can also take part in group activities in our studio to make new contacts.
5. Link your training to a reward
Sometimes it’s hard to get yourself together. The effort involved in going to the gym or putting on your running shoes seems huge. So get into the habit of linking sporting activity to a small reward! Positive incentives make it easier to stick to your routine.
Our tip: Got that new Netflix series you’re looking forward to? Perfect, from now on you can search them without a guilty conscience. The only condition: You may only watch episodes while you are on the treadmill. You can only listen to your favorite podcast when you’re running laps in the park. You can earn your favorite coffee by getting off the streetcar one stop earlier and walking the last few meters to your trusted barista. How to skillfully trick your inner couch potato.
So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get started together and keep at it – because it’s worth it! If you manage to establish a routine and make sport a permanent part of your life, you will feel better than ever before. Promise
